Arika Robinson, a recent graduate of Concordia-St. Paul in Minnesota and reigning NCAA Division 2 indoor champion in the women's high jump, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing in her first career outdoor national final May 26-28 at Grand Valley State in Allendale, Mich. Robinson is scheduled to compete May 26-27 in the heptathlon and May 28 in the high jump final, after scoring a personal-best 5,068 points to place second at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Championships at Northern State in Aberdeen, South Dakota, along with the winning the high jump crown with a 5-9.75 (1.77m) clearance. Robinson examines running her fastest 200 meters of 25.59 seconds on the first day of the heptathlon and also achieving a lifetime-best 108-4 (33.02m) in the javelin, despite the adjustment of the schedule as a result of weather delays. She also speaks about the challenges of participating in the high jump final and taking attempts at 6 feet (1.83m), before returning to the heptathlon and still having to run the 800 meters. Robinson analyzes the benefits of having the high jump scheduled on the final day of the NCAA Division 2 Outdoor Championships, and her pursuit of sweeping both indoor and outdoor national titles, after clearing 5-11.50 (1.82m) on her third attempt March 12 at the indoor final in Pittsburg, Kansas. She reflects on missing the outdoor season last year because of foot surgery as well as having the 2020 spring schedule canceled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and explains her appreciation for being healthy enough to compete at the conference and national championships. Robinson speaks about teammates Jakob Tordsen and Tia Donlan qualifying in the decathlon and discus throw, respectively, and the support they have provided for each other during the postseason. She also shares the impact that NSIC heptathlon champion Hannah Arason of St. Cloud State could have at the Division 2 outdoor final after transferring from Minnesota. Robinson also looks forward to working at a local ICU and beginning her Masters program in health care management, along with preparing for her Aug. 6 wedding to fiance Gavin Harbo, and talks about the importance of time management.
